Having lived here for quite some time now, I've managed to get onto various mailing lists for reasons that remain unclear to me. Today, I received a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union, who mistake me for a US citizen. In it, they urge me to write to 'my' senators, Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton. The wording of the template is quintessentially American, and makes me truly happy to be living here.
Those of you who spot 'anti-Americanism' in every left-winger, remember that the sentiments in this letter are just as American, if not, at least in my experience, more so, than anything emanating from the Bush White House. So wouldn't it be anti-American to criticise them?.. Just asking. Here's the text:
I am concerned by escalating assaults on the constitutional principles that define our nation. I urge you to stand up for freedom.
I am opposed to the Bush Administration's drive to make the infamous Patriot Act the permanent law of the land. Republicans and Democrats alike have acknowledged that the Patriot Act went too far too fast in ceding unchecked powers to the government. I am counting on you to bring this law back in line with the Constitution.
I am also alarmed by attempts to break down the wall of separation between church and state through 'faith-based' initiatives that funnel my tax dollars to religious institutions, and religious extremists' plans for injecting every aspect of our lives with their theology.
I oppose laws and policies that restrict reproductive rights, including the first-ever federal abortion ban.
I do not want to see discrimination written into the Constitution with amendments that deny basic rights to lesbians and gay men.
And I will not stand by while federal judges are rendered powerless to check the legislative and executive branches of my government through 'court stripping' laws.
On these fronts and others, I refuse to surrender my freedom. And I am counting on you to do the same!
