Not surprisingly, the UK Government's ridiculously complex proposals for a partial smoking ban look like they are going nowhere. The most likely outcome now seems to be an outright ban on all smoking in enclosed public spaces.
This subject brings out the hypocrite in me, I don't mind admitting. In principle, I'm opposed to a ban. Intervention by the state into people's otherwise legal activities is something I find as a rule reprehensible. Having said that, the joy of smoke-free nightlife here in New York is not to be sniffed at (or rather, the clean air involved is to be sniffed at). Pragmatically and, perhaps, selfishly, I think the ban is an excellent idea.
