The Digester

Splendid stuff - thanks. Your account illustrates the problem of invective (rather than the civilised discourse evoked elsewhere on your blog) -- it becomes virtually impossible for the protagonists to row back from their position and admit that, just possibly, their opponent may have a point. Thus, ultimately, their stance is weakened.

The 'This is masochism, but it is being offered to you by a sadist.' quote came from Hitch. For me, it was the knock-out blow.

First account I've read of this, thanks. You've confirmed my suspicions. People are a bit silly about this: what if one had absolutely and decisively trouned the other in this verbal joust? What would it have signified? Nothing.

The Phantom

I very largely agree. I like Hitchens and believe that the war is just, but do not think that this was won by either party.

I was in a lefty chat room yesterday, and all those there seemed to think that Galloway was running away with it. But today, in right-leaning Little Green Footballseveryone seemed sure that Hitchens killed Galloway.

Think that the moderator really messed up by bringing up New Orleans, a big subject that put this debate off topic more or less for good.

Third Avenue

I agree. Who won depends very much on your initial viewpoint. Indeed, the moderator was woeful (or, rather, pretty non-existent). She let them get away with not answering any questions, and failed to provide any kind of structure.

As the Digester says, the debate has really got so polarised, so personalised, that no-one is able to even countenance that the other side has even the tiniest sliver of moral rectitude on their side.

Thing of it is... Sadam had no WMD or operational ties to Al Queda. It is a big mud pit now.
